COA December 2007 "Evergreen" newsletter
Happy Holidays to all!
From the staff, volunteers, and Council members, we wish you and your family well during this holiday season.
As I write this on November 19, 2007, a small group of staff, volunteers, and members of the Westport Middle School Honor Society have just finished three hours of transporting many pounds of collected canned goods, unpacking and repacking them into individual boxes to be delivered to 100 Westport elders and families. The WCOA has also received donations of canned goods from a food bank, and some of the local churches have donated both canned goods and home baked goods, as well as cards and placemats from religious classes. Various local businesses have made monetary and food donations also.
Other groups have already contacted us to help us with our second round of food baskets for Christmas delivery.
This outpouring of community spirit has been so heartwarming for those of us who do this work because we feel good when we have successfully helped others. We thank EVERYONE who has helped us in this approach to fulfilling the mission of the Westport Council on Aging, “to identify and meet the needs of Westport’s elder population and to inform elders and the community of available services.” To these ends, we remind everyone to tell others about our services.
Best Wishes…..from everyone at the WCOA.

Westport COA has a wide-variety of volunteer opportunities for the community. The Outreach Program is looking for volunteers for the Friendly Visitor program—individuals visit elders once a week to brighten someone’s day, make a new friendship, and check on the elder’s well-being. Also, the Telephone Assurance Program (TAP) pairs volunteers with an elder to call and chat with, and keep in touch regarding their well-being. The Social Day Program is looking for volunteers to assist with activities and entertainment for elders in the program. General Administration—General office help, kitchen help, escort to assist elders with shopping and escorting for doctor’s appointments, special events, landscaping and maintenance assistance. Volunteer computer instructors are needed for the computer lab.
Volunteerism is a great way to give back to the community and help someone in need.
“Volunteering is an act of heroism on a grand scale. And it matters profoundly. It does more than help people beat the odds. It changes the odds.”
--President William Jefferson Clinton

A Little Help Goes A Long Way!
Thank you to all of you that helped to make our Holiday Fair successful – workers and purchasers alike. We are eager to tell about an exciting new fundraising event scheduled for early summer. The FWCOA Board is planning house tour of eleven wonderful Westport Point homes. We hope that this will be the first of many Westport neighborhood house tours in years to come. This year to compliment the tour, the Westport point Methodist church will be offering lunch for purchase and the Westport Art Group will be mounting a show for this day. The money raised at fundraising events is used to help fund capital improvements to the Center. If you are interested in volunteering to support this project, we welcome your help – 508-636-4494.
In addition, in this season of giving, FWCOA hopes that you will consider a gift of time by becoming a Friendly Visitor (home visits and telephone reassurance), a Senior Day Program volunteer, a van escort (to periodically ride with frail clients to appointments), a helper to assemble Christmas Baskets or make phone calls to schedule their delivery. If you can help, please call 636-1026. Volunteers are crucial to the success of the program. Thank you. GIFT SUGGESTIONS FOR AN OLDER PERSON

LITTLE THINGS MEAN A LOT
This year, try to spread cheer during the holidays by visitng a local nursing home or hospital, or some homebound person with your friends and family and offer to sing seasonal songs, or you just may want to spend some time with residents. You can offer to cook, clean, or do laundry for someone who is unable to do so alone. An elderly neighbor or relative will appreciate what is a minimal effort for you. Consider devoting your Christmas Day to helping serve dinner at a soup kitchen or other shelter.
