Press Release - Fraudulent Internet Scam
PRESS RELEASE - FRAUDULENT INTERNET SCAM
The Westport Police would like to advise the community of an Internet Scam that has surfaced in Town. We have learned that residents are being contacted by Internet email from a fraudulent entity advising them that their customer information is in need of an upgrade. The culprit is soliciting the information by representing themselves as being from the Charter Communications Company.
A copy of the email was obtained by the Westport Police where the cultprit's introduction stated "Dear Valued Customer" and goes on to blatantly say that they are trying to protect the customer from fraudelent activity on their company website. The culprit request(s) the person's Charter Email Account, User Name, Password and Date of Birth. The culprit also states that in the event that their information is not updated, that their service will be suspended. The email ends with the name "Charter Management". However, the email address to respond back to is entitled: supportunit@earthlink.net A Charter Representative was contacted and confirmed that the solicitation was in fact fraudulent. The Town of Westport has Charter Communications as a service provider and this is an important factor as to why this unknown fraudulent entity may be targeting Westport. We are asking everyone in the Community to be cautious anytime they are contacted and asked to provide personal information about their identity. If you have any questions about the legitimacy of any similiar activity, please contact the Westport Police Department at 508-636-1122.
Police Spokesman - Detective Jeff Majewski
