“Healthy Eating for the Diabetic” Informational Session
by Karen Quinn-Costa, Family Nurse Practitioner
June 11, 2009, 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Join us for a discussion on the topic of “Healthy Eating for the Diabetic” by a local Family Nurse Practitioner, Karen Quinn-Costa, from the office of Dr. Dennis Callen.  Karen will review fundamental behavioral change essential for the successful control of individual blood sugar and the preservation of the diabetic’s endogenous insulin hormone supply and steady state release (conditions directly responsible for the health of your cardiovascular system.)  How to select and apportion those carbohydrates of particular interest into your personal diet will be emphasized.  Toward this end, the introduction and/or review of a carbohydrate exchange list and a cursory mention of a very basic glycemic index will be discussed.

SENIOR CENTER CLOSING POLICY:   If the Westport Community Schools announce closings due to weather emergencies, the Senior Center will close for classes, transportation, and other activities--the COA office may operate for routine administrative operations only.

TRANSPORTATION for Westport’s elders, and handicapped persons of all ages, Monday - Friday, to area appointments scheduled between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.  When you make your doctor’s appointment, call us for a ride.  Please have the exact doctor’s name, street address, and telephone number when you call.

On Wednesday, June 17, 2009, we will serve soup and a chicken salad sandwich at the Westport Senior Center.  Lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m. for the first 60 guests who make reservations--all for the bargain price of $3.00 per person.

Students from the Westport Middle School will perform a musical presentation at 12 noon, Wednesday, June 17.

 

 


Discover Tuscany
November 3 - 12, 2009
     The Westport C.O.A. through the Friends of the WCOA is sponsoring a trip to Italy--a 10-day excursion hosted by Collette Vacations.
          A few tickets are left for this tour.  An itinerary can be viewed at the Westport Senior Center.      For more information, contact Mary Ellen Gomes, Westport Council on Aging, 508-636-1026.

 

 

BEACH PARKING PASSES
Beach parking passes for 2009 may be purchased at the Town Clerk’s office   Westport residents are required to show their vehicle registration.  Non-residents must also show their latest Westport real estate tax bill.  Passes will be issued for one year at $20 per vehicle, or $10 for those drivers age 65 and over.

Westport Council on Aging has been awarded a partnership with the Department of Public Health and the Massachusetts Council on Aging Association to implement My Life, My Health, Chronic Disease Self-Management Program. If you have a chronic condition, such as high blood pressure, arthritis, heart problems, diabetes, or any other chronic illness or condition, this program is for you. This is an evidence-based program that promotes the empowerment of people with chronic conditions and their loved ones, to take control of their health, and to improve the quality of their lives.  Please call Toni Cormier, LSWA at the Westport Council on Aging for more details. 508-636-1026.

PRESERVING HISTORY--One person at a time.
Fall River historian, Alfred Lima, is seeking individuals to be interviewed for
an oral history project.  The goal of the project is to preserve the history of
Fall River in the 1920’s, 30’s, and 40’s.  Mr. Lima invites any resident of Westport who grew up in Fall River--and who would like to participate in this oral history project--to call him at (508) 672-8217 to schedule an interview.

The Friends of the Westport Council on Aging has completed another year of meeting and finding ways to help supplement the services of the Senior Center for Westport elders.  We want you all to reserve the following dates:

          Coffee Hour and viewing of a new video filmed at the Senior Center.

Annual Meeting of Friends of the WCOA, Inc.
All members of the FWCOA (Friends of the Westport Council on Aging) are invited to attend the Annual Meeting.  This year, the Annual Meeting will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, June 15 at the Westport Senior Center, 75 Reed Road, Westport.   There is a Coffee Hour and a showing of the new video which is currently being filmed at the Westport Senior Center.  We look forward to seeing all of our members at 10:30 a.m. on June 15, 2009.
