ALTERNATE PLUMBING & GAS INSPECTOR
The Town of Westport, MA is seeking an Alternate Plumbing/Gas Inspector for a minimum of 15 to 20 inspections per year, $22.00 per inspection. The employee inspects residential, commercial, and industrial building construction and renovations, ensuring compliance with laws for plumbing and gas. Assists the Building Commissioner, Town boards and citizens. Must possess a Massachusetts Plumber Certification. Definition
Technical and inspection work related to the enforcement and interpretation of the state plumbing and gas codes and regulations; all other related work, as required.
Supervision
Works under the general direction of the Inspector of Buildings.
Performs varied and responsible inspection duties of a technical nature requiring exercise of independent judgment in ensuring compliance with proper standards and the enforcement of pertinent laws and regulations.
Job Environment
Administrative work is performed under typical office conditions; frequent inspection work is conducted in the field with exposure to various weather conditions and to the hazards associated with construction sites, such as open excavations and unfinished structures. Employee is required to work outside normal business hours and may be contacted at any time to respond to important situations. Operates light truck; operates standard office machines.
Makes frequent contact with the general public, homeowners, contractors and other town departments and boards, such as Board of Health, Fire and Public Works Departments.
Errors in judgment could endanger life and property, endanger public safety and other employees, and/or have direct financial or legal repercussions.
Essential Functions

Enforces state plumbing and gas codes and regulations through inspection of new construction and remodeling, issuing of related permits, and preparation and maintenance of appropriate reports and records.
Inspects all residential, commercial and industrial plumbing and gas installations to ensure conformance with state specifications and codes; conducts rough, final and other inspections of new construction and remodeling for code compliance.
Issues permits for plumbing and gas installations, alteration and repairs; inspects all gas piping and appliance installations in the process of construction, alteration or repair for which permits are issued.
Authorizes issuance of plumbing and gas permits by Building Department secretary.
Responds to plumbing and gas inquiries from contractors on code requirements and regulations; consults with state officials for verification of code interpretation and enforcement procedures.
Provides occasional assistance to gas companies and contractors in inspection of potentially hazardous gas conditions and recommends corrective measures.
Maintains department records and reports.
Performs similar or related work as required, or as situation dictates.
