Roadside Maintenance

Routine Roadside Maintenance

The Highway Department shall maintain the sides of the roads on all public ways under their jurisdiction.  The shoulders of the road are normally 10 ft. on each side.  The town is not responsible for any plantings or personal belongings placed within the road layout.

Tree saplings, grass, weeds and shrubs growth along the shoulders and within the road right of way shall be brush cut and/or mowed to allow for improved driving sight distance and snow storage.  The Town has a specialized mowing tractor with a boom-mounted flail for this purpose.  The tractor does not need to leave the paved surface of the road to remove sufficient vegetation for routine management purpose.  In some cases, removal of sticks and branches by hand is required to avoid interfering with storm water runoff.  This removal of extraneous live or dead vegetation is limited to within the right of way.
